Additional The Measure Of A Man: A Spiritual Autobiography Information

In this luminous memoir, a true American icon looks back on his celebrated life and career. His body of work is arguably the most morally significant in cinematic history, and the power and influence of that work are indicative of the character of the man behind the many storied roles. In The Measure of a Man, Sidney Poitier explores these elements of character and personal values to take his own measure -- as a man, as a husband and a father, and as an actor.

He explores the nature of sacrifice and commitment, pride and humility, rage and forgiveness, and paying the price for artistic integrity. What emerges is a picture of a man seeking truth, passion, and balance in the face of limits -- his own and the world's. A triumph of the spirit, The Measure of a Man captures the essential Poitier.

What Customers Say About The Measure Of A Man: A Spiritual Autobiography:

So inspiring. An amazing book about the inhibitions of racism for someone who had never been subject to racism until he moved to America. Lots of lessons to be learned in this book.

I will certainly be purchaseing more books from Amazon.M.Roberts Australia A very moving story of a man who always felt an outsider, he rose above the day to day struggle of race and became an outstanding human being. When he had no work as an actor he never hesitated to go back to washing dishes to make ends meet.He really believed in himself and that shone through with his ability to succeed. I am 65 years old and never been a reader of books, saw Oprah interview Sidney a few years ago on her show, that prompted me to read Measure of a Man, I have been inspired and now I have retired reading will be something I can enjoy.

What I did not like was the foul language I loved the writing style and the story line. What a phenominal man.

this one had me laughing out loud:* [when his parents saw their first movie, in whichhe was getting beaten-up by Richard Widmark] Mymother cried-out, "Hit him back Sidney."Listening to Poitier's laughter as he told that storymade me feel almost as if he was talking directly to me.Naturally, there's a lot of "inside" and very interesting information about the making of many of his films. justimagine that he starred in all three of the followingclassics:GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER, IN THE HEATOF THE NIGHT and TO SIR, WITH LOVE.It was no surprise to me to learn that THE MEASURE OF AMAN won a 2000 Grammy Award for Best Spoken WordAlbum. Heard THE MEASUARE OF A MAN, written and readby Sidney Poitier. Iactually felt compelled to write several of them down, including A PATCH OF BLUE, so that I can revisitthem via DVD rentals.I'm still amazed, too, at the one year in his career: 1967. because you get to hear Poitier's magnificent voice, this is one book that's definitely better listened to than read subtitled A SPIRITUAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY,it is just that. you get to know not only the facts aboutthis actor's life, but also what made him tick. For example, in talking about his father's influence, he commented:* Everything I do has been done to never bring disgrace to my father. In addition, I enjoyed hearing the many stories about both his parents.

I kept wanting to tell him about this other book that I loved, as I loved his life story. Portrait of a Man by Sidney Portier is a lovely book about an amazing man discovering himself though incredible circumstances. I was seeing the world through the eyes of someone who consistently went for his dreams even as his dreams got bigger and bigger. Portier I hope you read this and the Kanes' book, one good turn deserves another.

Read them for a boost, even if your life is already great. Mr. I recommend both books, highly. From both books I got that being perfectly yourself (rather than being perfect) your own life can be dream-worthy.

I saw how it helps to have a support system. There is encouragement and support right there in print. He is, and has always been quite inspiring to me. This other book: Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: The 3 Simple Ideas That Will Instantaneously Transform Your Life by Ariel and Shya Kane is also quite life-affirming.

I can relate to that. I was impressed by his courage. Mr Portier was able to find encouragement and support in each stage of his life.
